Combatting Depression

At Sensenbrenner Primary Care, we are deeply concerned about the mental health of our patients and desire to care for all aspects of your wellbeing. The Mayo Clinic reports that around 10-20% of Americans may experience some sort of seasonal "winter blues." Additionally, around 5% may experience a more severe form of seasonal depression. The cold winter months coupled with the unprecedented emotional toll of Covid fatigue have led to a spike in mental illness, especially depression. The Importance of Preventative Care

Finding a new normal is all about picking up where we left off, safely.  We can be around responsible friends and family that wear masks and practice good hygiene during this challenging time.  It’s also time to resume other things we might not want to do, but need to do to avoid more serious and chronic health risks and conditions. Healthier Gingerbread Cookies

Recipe Courtesy of @cookieandkate INGREDIENTS 3 cups whole wheat pastry flour, plus more for work surface2 teaspoons ground ginger2 teaspoons ground cinnamon¾ teaspoon kosher salt½ teaspoon ground cloves½ teaspoon baking soda¼ teaspoon baking powder½ cup melted coconut oil½ cup molasses ½ cup packed coconut sugar or brown sugar1 large eggPowdered sugar (optional) INSTRUCTIONS Combine the flour, ginger, cinnamon, salt, cloves, pepper, baking soda, and baking powder. Whisk until blended.In a small mixing bowl, combine the coconut oil and molasses and whisk until combined. Add the coconut sugar and whisk until blended. (If the sugar is gloppy and won’t incorporate into the mixture, warm the mixture for about 20 seconds in the microwave or over low heat on the stove, just until you can whisk it all together.) Crock Pot Beef Stew

Ingredients: 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces¼ cup all-purpose flour½ teaspoon salt½ teaspoon ground black pepper1 clove garlic, minced1 bay leaf1 teaspoon paprika1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce1 onion, chopped1 ½ cups beef broth3 potatoes, diced4 carrots, sliced1 stalk celery, chopped Directions: Place your meat in a slow cooker. In a small bowl mix together the flour, salt, and pepper; pour over meat, and stir to coat meat with flour mixture. For the sake of clarity, let’s start off by defining a few terms: Deductibles: Deductibles are the amount of money you have to pay toward your health care before your coverage kicks in. Movember

Studies show that men are much more likely to resist going to the doctor for preventative care than women.  The Cleveland Clinic conducted a study in 2019 showing that over 50% of males did not get regular checkups and 72% would rather do household chores instead. Of those who did go and see their doctor, 20% admitted that they hadn’t been 100% honest while they were there because of embarrassment, denial, etc. These findings are due in large part to the persistent stigma that men should be tough and resist needing help.
